Creating a much needed home office from a large storage press.
This project was borne from the need to work from home & have a dedicated work space, separate from the living / dining space. There was a large, under utilised storage press with a door off the main hallway. I decided to knock this in & move the wall that connected the hall to the bedroom, while also removing the door to the bedroom. I wanted to allow daylight into this space, so I included a feature window in the new wall, and positioned it high enough so that it gave privacy to the bedroom and a usable shelf space beneath it. I found this window in a salvage yard & painted it bright red. I painted an existing stool the same colour to tie the scheme together. There was an awkward box protruding from the ceiling, which I had to work with, so I incorporated it into the design by attaching a shelf to the bottom of it, which I could then use for down lights & some cubbies for books etc.
Custom carpentry
Nothing in this space was at right angles and it was a tight space, so I felt the best way to get the most out of it was to ask my carpenter to create a custom desk & shelves. I wanted the desk to wrap the space & turn into a deep shelf under the window. I didn't want any legs to break the horizontal lines as this helped the space seem less cluttered and larger. I bought the oak as countertops & got my carpenter to cut them to size. Then I gave them a quick oil to seal & deepen the colour.
The floors were replaced with a concrete look, vinyl tile called 'vinyl click.' They are hardwearing and easy to install, (by a builder). I wanted something non fussy & light to brighten the space. I wanted a statement light to be visible through the window from the front door, the position of the light in the bedroom ceiling had to be moved & I hung a large cloud like light centred in the window.
