Decorating a Period Property

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

This home was already extended & renovated, so the challenge was simply to furnish, paint & decorate it. I enlisted the help of a friend who is an expert in paint colours (niamh mcgowan) & she helped me pick some great colours that would especially suit a period property. In the sitting room, we painted the fireplace (which was white) a mid-grey colour & we painted the shelving the same colour as the walls so that the items on them, rather than the shelves, would stand out.

I am always amazed by how transformative a bold paint colour can be. It's such a quick & inexpensive way to create a mood or freshen up a space. We should all be a bit braver when it comes to paint colours, it's only paint after all and it can totally transform a room in an afternoon.

Master Bedroom

We chose a deep blue (Farrow & Ball, Stiffkey blue) for the master bedroom. Here we painted the wardrobes & walls the same colour, this made the period features, such as the fireplace really stand out. I sourced the large ornate wood headboard in an online auction for €200.
